Plot summary
Tom Sharky works the narcotics detail in Atlanta until a sting collapses and he is moved to the vice squad, the assignment nobody on the force wants. Vice is run by Lieutenant Friscoe, and when the unit arrests a small-time hooker named Mabel, the case opens onto a high-class prostitution ring and onto Dominoe, an escort who charges a thousand dollars a night. Sharky and his new partners stake out her apartment and learn she is involved with Donald Hotchkins, a leading candidate for governor. Friscoe sarcastically calls the rundown crew Sharky's machine. The stakeouts continue, and Sharky, who has never met Dominoe, listens to her recorded conversations and finds himself drawn to her.

- Stuntman Dar Robinson fell 220 feet from Atlanta's Hyatt Regency, doubling for the Westin Peachtree Plaza, and the drop still stands as the highest free-fall from a building in a commercially released film. Only his exit through the window was used; a dummy fell in the wide shot.
