Jerry Reed

Biography

A country singer, guitarist, songwriter, and actor, Jerry Reed appeared in more than a dozen films. Born in Atlanta, he took up guitar as a child, wrote songs in high school, and was signed at 18 by publisher Bill Lowery to make his first record. After Army service he settled in Nashville in 1961, where he worked as a session and touring guitarist. Elvis Presley recorded his song Guitar Man and hired him for studio sessions, while Reed's own recordings produced the crossover hit Amos Moses and the chart-topping When You're Hot, You're Hot, which earned a Grammy for Best Country Vocal Performance, Male. A duet album with Chet Atkins, Me & Jerry, won another Grammy. From the mid-1970s he acted more often, co-starring in Gator (1976), Smokey and the Bandit (1977), its two sequels, High-Ballin' (1978), The Survivors (1983), and The Waterboy (1998), his final film role.
