Plot summary
Mike Murphy works as a private investigator in 1933 Kansas City after leaving the police force. His former partner, Lieutenant Speer, is a bitter rival. Murphy's partner in the detective business gets hold of a suitcase that is supposed to contain a mobster's accounting records, and both Leon Coll's gang and Primo Pitt's crew want those ledgers. Murphy's secretary Addy loves both men and goes with Speer to a boxing match where Coll and the partner are present. Murphy is also unable to commit to Caroline Howley, a rich socialite he is seeing. With two gangs after the ledgers, Murphy and Speer agree to work together.

- Blake Edwards wrote the script but was fired during pre-production and replaced by Richard Benjamin. He kept his writing credit under the alias Sam O. Brown, chosen because the initials spell S.O.B., the title of his own film about Hollywood.
- On the first day of shooting a stuntman caught Burt Reynolds in the face with a metal chair and broke his jaw. Living on liquids, Reynolds lost more than 30 pounds before the shoot ended, and tabloids claimed he had AIDS.
- Decades later, director Richard Benjamin contradicted that famous stunt story on Gilbert Gottfried's podcast in September 2021, saying Reynolds hurt his jaw by falling out of a make-up chair.
- Clint Eastwood does more than act in the film: a lifelong jazz fan, he is one of the pianists heard on the jazz soundtrack written by Lennie Niehaus.
