Plot summary
In 1912, Yaqui Joe, who is half Yaqui and half white, holds up an Arizona bank and takes $6,000. He carries the money into Sonora, Mexico, and spends it on a hundred rifles for his people, whom the government is putting down. Lyedecker, an Arizona lawman, rides after him across the border, set on getting the cash back and bringing Joe in, which would advance his career. General Verdugo's troops capture both men. Verdugo is fighting the Yaqui, and Lyedecker wants no part of Joe's cause. Sarita, a Yaqui revolutionary, has her own quarrel with Verdugo's soldiers over her father. The two men get free of Verdugo and reach the hills, and Sarita joins them.

- Burt Reynolds said he "spent the entire time refereeing fights" between his 100 Rifles co-stars Jim Brown and Raquel Welch, after press reports the two had clashed on set.
- Clair Huffaker, the film's original screenwriter, asked for his credit to be replaced with the pseudonym "Cecil Hanson", saying the finished product "bears absolutely no resemblance to my original script", yet his real name still appears in the credits.
- Jim Brown earned $200,000 for the film plus five percent of its box office, a kind of salary few black actors received at the time.
- Raquel Welch's Spanish accent in the film sounded, in one co-star's words, "like a cross between Carmen Miranda and ZaSu Pitts", and Jim Brown was afraid of heights and horses yet had to fight on horseback on a cliff.
- 100 Rifles was shot in Almería, Spain to save money, and director Tom Gries was hospitalized for three days with typhus during the production.
- Burt Reynolds played the white half of his half-Indian character Yaqui Joe as if he were from Alabama, wearing wrist bands, arm bands and "funky spurs" so noisy he could not hear the dialogue.
