Plot summary
Angel Baby lives with her family in the rural American South. She has not spoken since she was eight. When her mother finds her kissing Hoke Adams and drives him off, the family, worried about her soul, attends a tent revival led by Paul Strand, and he restores her voice. The next day she becomes convinced that God has called her, and she joins his ministry, where she takes speaking lessons and receives constant attention. Paul's wife, Sarah, is jealous. Paul's services put women in provocative costumes to play biblical temptresses such as Jezebel and Delilah, and Angel's devotion to him grows.
