Plot summary
David Fowler is a successful sculptor with a long romantic history, and his psychiatrist sees a problem in how he makes decisions. He recalls spotting a woman's legs through a window as she walks down the street, following her and faking a hit-and-run accident. He learns the woman is Agnes Chapman, meets her at a gas station, gives her his phone number, and follows her to an aerobics class. He remembers his mother, who was regularly absent, and a first dalliance at fifteen with a prostitute named Darla. He also picks up Nancy, another prostitute, and pays her two hundred dollars to stay with him for the night without sleeping with her. In Houston to unveil a sculpture he meets Louise, the wife of a Texas millionaire named Roy Carr.

- During an improvised therapy scene, Julie Andrews wore an earpiece without Burt Reynolds knowing and took advice from Milton Wexler as she questioned him in character as Dr. Marianna Solari.
- Five months after filming ended and a month before release, Blake Edwards reshot the ending over two days, using Julie Andrews, Marilu Henner and Kim Basinger but not Burt Reynolds, to make the film less bleak.
- Dustin Hoffman reportedly turned down the lead in Blake Edwards's remake, and after Warren Beatty dropped out, Burt Reynolds signed to star in December 1982.
