The Spy Who Laughed at Danger puts Sonny Hooper in charge of its stunts, and his wisecracks try Roger Deal, the picture's egotistical director, and Tony, his officious and cowardly assistant. Impacts on his spine send Sonny to painkillers several times a day. Gwen Doyle is the woman he lives with, and her father, Jocko, is a retired stuntman. Cully, his assistant and closest friend, works beside him. A friend draws Sonny into a charity show, where Delmore 'Ski' Shidski makes a spectacular entrance, and a barroom brawl leaves the two of them friends.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Hooper (1978)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Hooper was one of the first films to make use of the blooper reel credit roll, showing a smaller screen of outtakes from the film to one side while the credits roll slowly up the other side. Needham refined this technique for later films such as Smokey and the Bandit II, Stroker Ace and the Cannonball Run films.
- The project was shelved in 1976 after the Motion Picture Association of America ruled in an arbitration suit filed by director Richard Rush that its title was too similar to his planned film The Stunt Man.
- It was rumored that the Roger Deal character played in the film by Robert Klein was a send-up of Peter Bogdanovich, who had made At Long Last Love and Nickelodeon with Reynolds.
- In March 1978 director Richard Rush filed another MPAA appeal, forcing Warner Bros. to change the title of the film to Hooper.
