Biography

Dom DeLuise was an American actor and comedian known for comedic roles and for his work in Mel Brooks films. A Brooklyn native raised in Bensonhurst, he trained at Manhattan's High School of Performing Arts. His first paid stage role came at 18 in Bernie's Christmas Wish, and he later acted and stage-managed at the Cleveland Play House from 1952 to 1954. After off-Broadway and Broadway appearances, he drew notice as a spy in The Glass Bottom Boat (1966). He often appeared with Burt Reynolds in The Cannonball Run (1981), Smokey and the Bandit II (1980), and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982). Brooks cast him in The Twelve Chairs (1970), Blazing Saddles (1974), Silent Movie (1976), and History of the World: Part I (1981). He voiced animated characters in The Secret of NIMH (1982), An American Tail (1986), Oliver & Company (1988), and All Dogs Go to Heaven (1989). He hosted Candid Camera from 1991 to 1992.

    DeLuise was 18 when he made his paid stage debut, playing Bernie the dog in the drama Bernie's Christmas Wish.

  2. Beyond film

    DeLuise showed off his comedic skills as Frosch, the jailer's speaking part, in the operetta Die Fledermaus at the Metropolitan Opera. He played the role in four separate revivals there between December 1989 and January 1996.

  3. First role

    In 1961, DeLuise took a part in Another Evening with Harry Stoons, an off-Broadway musical revue that ran for nine previews and a single performance. Barbra Streisand, then 19, was also in the cast.
