Plot summary
Sam Whiskey, an adventurer in the Old West, agrees to a proposition from Laura Breckenridge, a wealthy widow. The gold bars she wants belong to the Denver Mint, where her husband, Congressman Phillip Breckenridge, swapped them for plated lead fakes during an official visit. The bars went down with a riverboat in Colorado's Platte River. The mint's next inspection falls due in a week, and Laura's family name depends on the gold being back in the vault before anyone looks. She offers Sam $20,000. He brings in two partners, O. W. Bandy, an Army acquaintance who invents contraptions, and a blacksmith named Jedidiah Hooker, each promised a cut. The wreck sits fifteen feet below the surface, and Bandy makes Sam a diving helmet using a bucket and a bellows.

- The film was one of the first to have a scene cut under the new MPAA rating system: director Laven had submitted a "bare-from-the-waist-up shot" of Angie Dickinson, then substituted a tighter shot from the shoulders up to avoid an "R" rating, at the time an entirely new concept.
- Although it was not a commercial success, the film helped establish Burt Reynolds' screen persona as a cocky hero, which he used to great success in the 1970s; Norton went on to write several Reynolds films, including White Lightning and Gator.
