Plot summary
The wealthy businessman E.J. Hume tells the Brooklyn private detective Shamus McCoy that Victor Papas stole millions of dollars in diamonds from him and was then killed. Hume wants the stones back and the killers found, and he offers McCoy ten thousand dollars to take the case, a fee large enough that McCoy accepts even though he cannot see why he was chosen. With help from his informant friend Springy and a drug dealer he knows, McCoy digs into Papas's background and turns up the company where Papas and his girlfriend both had jobs, River Edge Export, and a bar called the Health Club, where Papas knew a bouncer named Bolton.
