Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Nickelodeon (1976)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Burt Reynolds collapsed on the set one day; doctors could not figure out what was wrong with him and filming was postponed for two weeks while he recovered. The film then went over schedule and over budget, and director Peter Bogdanovich had to forfeit his $500,000.
  • Columbia Pictures head David Begelman rejected Peter Bogdanovich's original leads, Jeff Bridges, John Ritter, Cybill Shepherd and Orson Welles, and cast Burt Reynolds and Ryan O'Neal instead. Begelman also barred Bogdanovich's girlfriend Cybill Shepherd from the female lead, fearing a backlash after Daisy Miller and At Long Last Love, so model Jane Hitchcock, Shepherd's friend, was cast on her recommendation.
  • Peter Bogdanovich said it was very important to him that Nickelodeon be shot in black and white; Columbia, the studio, would not allow it and canceled the picture after a big fight. Barry Spikings at British-Lion then funded part of the film, throwing in a few million dollars.
  • Peter Bogdanovich directed some scenes of Nickelodeon while sitting on horseback, and when asked why, he said it was because that was the way John Ford did it.
  • Cinematographer Laszlo Kovacs lit Nickelodeon to accommodate black and white, using silent-era techniques such as irising in and out of scenes; Bogdanovich said there are no opticals at all in the film.
  • Burt Reynolds and his stunt man Hal Needham had an unhappy experience making Nickelodeon, and later made the film Hooper, which featured a pretentious film director based on Peter Bogdanovich.
  • After Nickelodeon, Peter Bogdanovich felt he had compromised so much that he took three years off from directing, returning with Saint Jack in 1979.
