Plot summary
Lieutenant Phil Gaines of the Los Angeles police is about to leave for a weekend with his girlfriend Nicole Britton, a call girl, when he is sent to a beach where a young woman has died. The dead girl is Gloria Hollinger, and her parents, Marty and Paula, come to identify her; Marty strikes Gaines for leaving the body uncovered. The autopsy finds semen but no signs of rape, and the blood tests point to suicide. Gaines's superior, John Santoro, wants the file closed, since Marty has no standing, but Marty refuses to believe his daughter killed herself and says he will track down whoever is responsible. Gaines also takes a photograph of Gloria out of her wallet; his partner, Sergeant Louis Belgrave, has it enlarged.
