Plot summary
Jefferson Steel is a Hollywood action star whose career has faded, and he wants a role that will restore it. His agent signs him up for what Steel believes is a production of King Lear at Stratford-upon-Avon, and Steel flies to England expecting the part he has been waiting for. The engagement is instead with the Stratford Players, an amateur dramatics group in Stratford St John, a Suffolk village, staging the play for charity. The villagers are delighted to have a star among them. Steel considers himself above the company he has joined, and he has left behind a daughter in New York, an aspiring actress he is estranged from.
