Plot summary
Paul Crewe, a former NFL quarterback accused of shaving points, is on federal probation for five years. A drunken joyride in his girlfriend Lena's Bentley ends in a high-speed chase and a crash in San Diego, so his probation is revoked and he receives three years. Warden Hazen, an avid football fan, has Crewe transferred to a Texas prison, where threats and a hot box force him to help the guards' team led by Captain Knauer. Crewe suggests a tune-up game, and Hazen orders him to build an inmate team. With prisoner Caretaker, Crewe starts assembling players, and former Heisman winner Nate Scarborough agrees to coach. Deacon Moss and other athletic inmates refuse to play because of Crewe's past. Crewe loses a basketball challenge to Deacon, but Earl Megget joins, and after guards racially insult Megget, Deacon's group joins too.
