Plot summary
New York, 1935. After a night of heavy drinking, Broadway star Kitty O'Kelly loses her boyfriend. Gambler Johnny Spanish wins at poker and heads back to his shabby downtown apartment. Heiress Brooke Carter is handed a notice by her maid Elizabeth: the hotel will evict them unless the bill is paid. Playboy millionaire Michael Oliver Pritchard III, tired of partying, rides home with Rodney James, his chauffeur and valet. Still hungover, Kitty runs outside and flags down Michael's limousine, taking it for a taxi. Rodney avoids her, but a minor accident follows, and Michael and Kitty like each other at once. At the race track, Brooke meets Johnny, whom she dislikes. She puts her last three hundred dollars on the same race as Johnny, who offers her and Elizabeth a ride.

- A longtime studio editor, Jim Blakely, secretly assembled his own 121-minute edit of At Long Last Love that followed Peter Bogdanovich's shooting script, quietly made it the default version as early as 1979, and died before anyone learned what he had done.
- After At Long Last Love opened at Radio City Music Hall to scathing reviews, Peter Bogdanovich had an open letter of apology for the film printed in newspapers throughout the United States.
- Peter Bogdanovich planned to act in the film himself, then replaced himself with Elliott Gould, who had musical-theater experience; after Gould and O'Neal dropped out, Burt Reynolds took the male lead, a choice Bogdanovich said he was "talked into".
- To recreate the spontaneous feel of Ernst Lubitsch musicals such as The Love Parade, with Jeanette MacDonald and Maurice Chevalier, Bogdanovich had every song sequence filmed live; the leads, especially Burt Reynolds, weren't accomplished singers or dancers, causing delays and mess-ups.
- Bogdanovich's then-girlfriend Cybill Shepherd gave him a book of Cole Porter songs, and that gift led him to build a musical around the composer's lyrics.
