Biography

Ernest Borgnine was an American actor whose screen and television career lasted more than six decades. Born in Hamden, Connecticut, he studied drama at the Randall School of Drama and joined the Barter Theatre before making his Broadway debut in Harvey in 1949. After early television work, he broke through in From Here to Eternity (1953) as the brutal Sergeant Fatso Judson. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for Marty (1955), also earning BAFTA and Golden Globe honors. He became known for both villainous and leading roles, appearing in The Dirty Dozen (1967), The Wild Bunch (1969), and The Poseidon Adventure (1972). On television he starred in the sitcom McHale's Navy from 1962 to 1966 and Airwolf from 1984 to 1986, and he voiced Mermaid Man on SpongeBob SquarePants between 1999 and 2012. He received an Emmy nomination at age 92 for ER and died in 2012.
