Plot summary
In October 1942, the submarine Greyfish is ordered to a Japanese convoy in the Pacific. Among the ships is the carrier Shinaru, one of those that took part in the attack on Pearl Harbor, and Barney Doyle, the boat's commander, has long wanted it sunk. He learns too that a transport in the same convoy carries American prisoners from a camp in the Philippines, the camp where his wife and child were held. His friend and second-in-command, Lieutenant Archer Sloan, offers to make the torpedo run himself, so that Doyle is spared direct responsibility for what happens to his family.
