Plot summary
Matt Dow, a drifter, meets the young cowboy Davey Bishop at a watering hole, and while the two of them fire at a hawk, a recently robbed train passes. The men aboard think the shots mean another holdup and throw a bag of money their way. Fearing a posse, Dow and Bishop ride for the next town down the line to give the money back, but the posse reaches them first. Bishop takes a wound and is carried to the Swenson farm to recover. Back in the sheriff's office, Dow tells the trainmen what happened, then visits the farm, where Helga Swenson and her father welcome him. The town regrets the shooting, because Bishop's limp will never go away. Dow takes the sheriff's job and names Bishop his deputy.
