Plot summary
Martha Schmidt lives with her husband Jim on Our Blessing, an isolated farm in Pennsylvania. Their neighbors are mostly Hittites, an austere religious sect that Jim's father Isaiah leads and that forbids contact with outsiders; the sect regards Martha as an incubus who lured Jim away from the community. Jim dies when his tractor starts up and crushes him. After his funeral, Martha's friends Lana Marcus and Vicky Anderson travel from the city to the farm, intending to convince her to move back to Los Angeles. Isaiah offers to buy Our Blessing from Martha, and she turns him down. The sheriff tells the three women to leave town because someone may be after them, but they choose to stay.
