Plot summary
The research vessel R/V Triton carries the Project Neptune team, whose director, Samuel Andrews, works to keep its oceanographic program going against resistance from the foundation's head, Shepherd. Below on the sea floor, Hal Hamilton's crew is preparing to surface when an undersea earthquake tears the lab loose and sends it into a trench, too deep for divers. Andrews turns to an experimental Navy mini-sub and its captain, Adrian Blake, joined by chief diver Don MacKay, diver Bob Cousins and Dr. Leah Jansen, Hamilton's fiancée, for the descent. The trapped crew's reserve air supply is limited, so the rescue is urgent.
