Plot summary
Detective Johnny Damico hears shots on a dark street and sees a man kneeling over a body. The stranger shows a badge, claims to be a detective from another precinct, and walks away. Damico learns the dead man was a witness due before a grand jury looking into waterfront crime, and that the same badge belonged to the case's chief investigator, killed hours earlier. His mistake could cost him his job. The police commissioner and the district attorney give him a way back: go to New Orleans posing as a thug called Tim Flynn. Back home, he takes a longshoreman's job and works his way toward the enforcers around the docks, while trying to learn who runs the rackets, a man known only as Blackie Clegg.
