Plot summary
Twenty years ago the flamboyant star Lylah Clare fell to her death in suspicious circumstances. The agent Bart Langner discovers Elsa Brinkmann, an unknown actress who looks and sounds like Lylah, and he talks the director Lewis Zarkan, who had been Lylah's husband, into meeting her. Zarkan takes Elsa on, and he and Langner then persuade Barney Sheean, the brash studio head, to back a picture with her in the lead part; Sheean is struck by the resemblance as well. The picture is a planned biography of the dead star, and the role is Lylah.

- Kim Novak was upset to discover that director Robert Aldrich had Hildegard Knef dub some of her lines in a deep German-accented voice without telling her, and called seeing the finished film humiliating.
- In 1965 Robert Aldrich announced that French star Jeanne Moreau would play the lead in The Legend of Lylah Clare, but filming was pushed back because Aldrich was busy with other projects.
- Kim Novak, signed in May 1967 to play the lead, had not made a film in three years, partly because of a riding accident on the set of the film 13, which became Eye of the Devil, and partly because she had lost interest in working.
- Francis Lederer was going to play a role but had to withdraw because of laryngitis, and Milton Seltzer replaced him.
