Robert Ryan

Biography

Robert Ryan was an American actor who built a career playing hardened anti-heroes and ruthless villains, especially in film noir and Westerns. Born in Chicago, he joined a small theater company there in 1937 and later studied at the Max Reinhardt Workshop in Hollywood. A Broadway production of Clash by Night led RKO to sign him, and his breakthrough came as an anti-Semitic killer in Crossfire (1947), a performance that brought an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He went on to play an aging boxer in The Set-Up (1949) and a villain opposite James Stewart in The Naked Spur (1953). On stage he won a Drama Desk Award in 1971 for his work in Long Day's Journey into Night, and he was nominated for a BAFTA for Billy Budd (1962). He also worked often in television as a guest star and won awards for his work in The Iceman Cometh (1973).
