Woody Strode

Biography

Woody Strode was an American athlete and actor who, after a college career as a decathlete and a stint as one of the first Black players in the postwar NFL, turned to film acting and became known for Westerns and historical pictures. Born in Los Angeles, he broke into movies with a small part in Sundown (1941) and got bigger work after producer Walter Mirisch saw him wrestling and cast him in The Lion Hunters. He won critical praise for Pork Chop Hill (1959) and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor as the gladiator Draba in Spartacus (1960). John Ford gave him the title role in Sergeant Rutledge (1960) and roles in Two Rode Together (1961) and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962). Later films included The Professionals (1966), Once Upon a Time in the West (1968), Posse (1993) and The Quick and the Dead (1995), and he wrote an autobiography, Goal Dust.
