Plot summary
Paul Bäumer and five classmates from the same school volunteer for the German imperial army in 1914, convinced by their teacher Kantorek that German culture is superior. Training camp places them under Corporal Himmelstoss, a harsh disciplinarian who drills them without mercy. They board a troop train for the Western Front, passing a train carrying the wounded home. In the line they are assigned to a squad led by Stanislaus "Kat" Katzinsky, an older recalled reservist who teaches the new men the practical skills of survival. When the squad rotates out of the trenches into French billets, a replacement draft arrives under Himmelstoss, who no longer frightens them as he once did.
