Plot summary
Television holds a boy's attention until the power goes out, so his grandfather, once a screenwriter, tells him an old story about Merlin. As the tale has it, Merlin opens a shop in a present-day strip mall with his wife and a collection of gnomes, snakes and dragons, and two stories follow from it. Jonathan Cooper, a newspaper columnist, arrives with Madeline, his wife, who longs for a child, and he insults Merlin, who hands over his spellbook as proof of who he is. The other story begins when a thief carries the cymbal-banging monkey toy out of the shop and it ends up at a novelty store, where a woman buys it as a gift for her son Michael's birthday.
