Plot summary
Major General Worden tells Major Wright that the Germans can launch V-2 rockets loaded with nerve gas at the Allies. Wright is ordered to take a dozen convicts into France, to the monastery at Saint-Michel, and there destroy the gas and free the scientists held inside. He picks twelve men, among them Joe Stern, Eric "Swede" Wallan, Ernesto Ferucci and brothers Ronald and David Webber, and Sergeant Holt trains them for a week. Colonel Krieger has tightened security at the monastery. The squad comes ashore by sea and meets Marie Verlaine, a Resistance fighter who tells Wright that the scientists' families are kept at the monastery too. To avoid Krieger's patrols, Wright chooses to travel by river.
