Plot summary
In the year 2130, the exploratory craft USS Palomino is homeward bound after eighteen months spent searching for extraterrestrial life when it comes upon a black hole and, beside it, the USS Cygnus, missing for twenty years. Kate McCrae's father served aboard that ship. The black hole's gravity damages the Palomino, which docks with the Cygnus, where the crew meets Dr. Hans Reinhardt. He says he has lived aboard since a meteor field disabled the Cygnus, that he sent his crew away and built faceless drones and robots in their place. He plans to fly the ship through the black hole, a feat only Dr. Alex Durant believes possible.

- Gary Nelson wanted Sigourney Weaver for the role of Kate McCrae in The Black Hole, but the head of Disney's casting department balked at her unusual name and rejected her, so the part went to someone else.
- Jennifer O'Neill was cast as Kate McCrae but was told to cut her hair for the zero-gravity scenes; she brought her hairstylist Vidal Sassoon to the studio, drank wine during the haircut and was hospitalized after a car crash, losing the role. Yvette Mimieux was cast the next day.
- The Black Hole cost $20 million to produce plus another $6 million for advertising, making it the most expensive picture Disney had ever produced at the time.
- Disney's effects team created 150 matte paintings for The Black Hole under supervisor Harrison Ellenshaw, but only 13 of them were used in the finished film.
- Disney hired James Bond composer John Barry in April 1979 to score The Black Hole, and it became the first film score ever to be recorded digitally.
