Plot summary
In September 1944, word reaches the Allies through the French Resistance that Waffen-SS General Sepp Dietrich and other senior Nazis in occupied France intend a second try at killing Adolf Hitler. Allied commanders fear the opposite of a success: a more capable German leader in Hitler's place would draw the war out longer. Major John Reisman, awaiting court martial for stealing a shipment of steaks, is offered a reprieve if he will train twelve soldiers convicted of military crimes for a mission to kill the general. He accepts, and with MP Sergeant Clyde Bowren he goes back to Marston Tyne Military Prison to pick the men. Reisman first chooses thirteen, returns one of them to prison for insubordination, and drills the remaining dozen at a disused train station.
