Plot summary
The Robe of Christ is left with Peter after Marcellus and Diana are put to death, and the emperor Caligula covets it for the powers attributed to it. Demetrius, once Marcellus' slave, sets himself against the emperor's wish. A run-in with a Roman centurion lands him in the arena, where he trains as a gladiator and earns the crowd's applause by surviving a pack of tigers. His faith keeps him from killing other men in the fights. Caligula assigns him to guard Messalina, the unfaithful wife of his uncle Claudius, who turns her attention on him. He grows weary of attending her and goes back to the arena.
