Plot summary
After the Civil War, John Benedict comes home to his Colorado ranch with his ranch hand Free. Lieutenant Able wants to recruit John's son Morgan for West Point, and Morgan agrees. While John hunts the mountain lion Morgan shot, Comanche riders kill his dog and take his horse. He returns to find his family murdered and Free mortally wounded; before Free dies he says a white man led the raid. John swears vengeance, joins a posse chasing Comancheros and heads into Texas. In Mexico he reaches a prison camp and picks six hardened convicts, among them Hoop, Job, Chamaco, Cholo, Quiberon and Zweig, claiming he needs workers for his mine. He frees them and promises a reward if they ride with him. Hoop tells him the man leading the Comancheros is called Tarp.
