Plot summary
Agnes Hurley is a disillusioned housewife in the Bronx, married to Tom Hurley, a cab driver who works for a large taxi fleet. Tom has been saving for years to buy a medallion and become self-employed. Agnes wants something better for their daughter Jane. Jane becomes engaged to Ralph Halloran, and Agnes sees an opportunity for the romantic, elaborate wedding she never had, since she and Tom could never afford one. Tom protests that the money is not there. Jane is upset by the strain the plans put on the family. Disputes over the cost continue, and Uncle Jack Conlon, who lives with the Hurleys, is drawn in.
