Plot summary
In colonial New England the Preston family betrayed the Satanic priest Jonathan Corbis, and for generations he has come after them, wanting a book signed by his cult members that binds their souls to Satan. Corbis seizes Steve Preston, the family patriarch, who warns Emma, his wife, and Mark, their son, to give the book up. Mark hides it instead and leaves Emma with the family friend John, and Corbis's followers take her. Mark seeks Corbis out in a ghost town and demands a contest of faith; the cult surrounds him. Sheriff Owens dismisses John's account of what happened, so Mark's brother Tom and Tom's wife Julie go looking for the missing Prestons themselves.

- A face mold of William Shatner taken during the production was used by Halloween mask company Don Post Studios to make a mask; the crew of the slasher film Halloween (1978) bought one from a magic shop, spray-painted it white, and Nick Castle wore it as Michael Myers.
- While shooting the film, John Travolta was introduced to Scientology when his co-star Joan Prather gave him a copy of Dianetics, the book by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard.
- Ernest Borgnine said the film was financed with mafia money and that he was never paid for his work; its distributor, Bryanston Distributing Company, was known to have close links to the Colombo crime family.
