Plot summary
Jubal Troop is found injured and without a horse, and rancher Shep Horgan takes him in. Horgan hires him after watching him ride an unbroken horse, and Jubal's work earns him the job of foreman over the other cowhands, which angers Pinky, until now the ranch's top hand. Pinky greets the newcomer by saying he smells of sheep dip and burns his clothes while he sleeps. Horgan's younger wife Mae, whom he met in Canada, feels trapped in the marriage and turns her attention to Jubal, who keeps his distance and instead seeks out Naomi Hoktor, a young woman traveling with a religious group's wagon train camped on Horgan's land. Pinky and the cowhands try to drive the travelers off; Jubal says they cause no trouble, and they stay.
