Did you know?!

  1. Early training

Nighy applied to RADA but was turned down, so he went to the Guildford School of Dance and Drama instead, where he trained for the stage.

  2. A role that slipped away

In early 2004, The Sunday Times said Nighy was shortlisted to play the Ninth Doctor when Doctor Who returned to BBC television in 2005. Christopher Eccleston ended up taking the part.

  3. Getting ready for a role

In 2006, Nighy took the part of Davy Jones, the main villain in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. Computer-generated makeup covered his face completely, and he gave the character a Scots accent.

  4. Big break

Nighy claimed the BBC serial The Men's Room, adapted by Laura Lamson from an Ann Oakley novel, was the job that launched his career.

  5. Beyond film

Since 1999, Nighy has taken on the role of Charles Paris, the amateur sleuth created by Simon Brett, at least 17 times for BBC Radio 4.
