Plot summary
In the spring of 1944, German forces are trying to secure intelligence about the coming Allied invasion, and MI5 officers Major Cunningham and Captain Meeks have intercepted one of their agents in London. On the coast at Walmington-on-Sea, Captain Mainwaring's Home Guard platoon still lacks recognition for its war work. During a training exercise the men force a car off the road and meet Rose Winters, an elegant journalist who intends to write about the platoon for a national magazine. The men are delighted, and her presence brings quarrels with the townsfolk and trouble at home with their wives. Sergeant Wilson grows friendly with her after learning that she was once his pupil at Oxford.
