Plot summary
Viktor, an elder of the vampire coven, raises a werewolf child born in human form, names him Lucian, and intends a race of Lycan slaves: guards for the fortress by day, laborers for the vampires by night. Wild werewolves that can never return to human shape overrun the countryside, and human nobles pay Viktor in silver to be shielded from them, a tribute that also keeps his slaves in check. Grown, Lucian and Viktor's daughter Sonja become secret lovers, though Sonja is reckless and defies her father. When wild werewolves attack her, Lucian breaks the bindings that hold his transformation back and saves her. Viktor admits what Lucian did yet cannot pardon the escape.
