Biography
Johnny Depp is an American actor and musician who performed in amateur rock bands before his screen debut in A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). After a supporting part in Platoon (1986), he became a teen idol through his role as an undercover officer in the Fox series 21 Jump Street. His films include Edward Scissorhands (1990), What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993), Donnie Brasco (1997), Chocolat (2000), Blow (2001), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), Public Enemies (2009), Rango (2011), Black Mass (2015), and Murder on the Orient Express (2017). He earned three Academy Award nominations, for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), Finding Neverland (2004), and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007). He won a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award, and in 1999 received an Honorary César and a Hollywood Walk of Fame star. He founded the company Infinitum Nihil and also formed the rock supergroup Hollywood Vampires.

A role that slipped away
Depp was cast by the director as the lead in the 1986 skating drama Thrashin', but the producer overrode that decision. He then played a Vietnamese-speaking private in a minor supporting role in Oliver Stone's Platoon.

To get ready for the part, Depp studied many Charlie Chaplin films, wanting to learn how to create sympathy without dialogue. The role brought him his first Golden Globe nomination.
