Plot summary
Six ROZZUM robots from a Universal Dynamics cargo ship wash up on an uninhabited island, and only Unit 7134 survives, accidentally activated by wildlife. The frightened animals call her a monster, and she hurts herself trying to help them. Even after she learns to communicate with all the animals, none of them needs her services, so she signals for retrieval and is struck by lightning. Fleeing Thorn, a grizzly bear, she crushes a goose nest and saves the last egg from Fink, a hungry red fox. A gosling hatches, imprints on her and breaks her long-range transmitter, and Pinktail, a mother opossum, gives her the task of raising him until he can eat, swim and fly.

- Fink the fox's vocal effects in the film were provided by real foxes: Finnegan and others from the SaveAFox Rescue.
- The Wild Robot was the last film DreamWorks Animation made entirely in-house at its Glendale campus, as the studio began shifting toward relying more on outside animation studios for its projects after 2024.
- Roz's final design came from artist Hyun Huh, one of several designers who made prototypes for the robot; the crew fell immediately in love with his version, which Chris Sanders described as simple and appealing and which became the basis for the character in the finished film.
- Director Chris Sanders described the film's visual style, inspired by classic Disney movies and Hayao Miyazaki, as "a Monet painting in a Miyazaki forest", citing Bambi and My Neighbour Totoro as the biggest influences on its look.
- Mark Hamill, who voices the bear Thorn, said that reading The Wild Robot reminded him of his first feelings about Star Wars, the 1977 film in which he originated the role of Luke Skywalker.
- The film's climate-change themes include a scene of a futuristic San Francisco with a partially submerged Golden Gate Bridge; DreamWorks developed the environmental elements with Universal's GreenerLight Program and the Natural Resources Defense Council, and produced a sustainability PSA featuring Lupita Nyong'o.
