Plot summary
Former MI5 analyst Johnny Worricker and Margot Tyrrell move between countries in Europe, staying out of the Security Service's reach. Worricker asks his old colleague Rollo Maverley to leak word of Prime Minister Alec Beasley's dealings with Stirling Rogers and the Bridge Foundation, but the story draws scant attention. With their funds running out, Worricker decides they must return to Britain. He contacts Belinda Kay, editor-in-chief of The Independent, and lays out the full story for her. In London, Jill Tankard, acting head of MI5, offers her help to Deputy Prime Minister Anthea Catcheside, whose husband Bill faces trouble.
