Plot summary

Dougal, a Skye Terrier, spikes a sweets cart's tire, then crashes the cart into the Magic Roundabout. The explosion damages the roundabout, which spins until an ice wizard, Zeebad, flies out and freezes it, trapping repairman Mr Rusty, Dougal's owner Florence, and children Coral and Basil inside. Dougal and his friends Brian, Ermintrude and Dylan summon Zebedee, a jack-in-the-box wizard. Zebedee says the roundabout kept his evil counterpart Zeebad imprisoned. To stop Zeebad from freezing the world, the friends must slot three enchanted diamonds into the roundabout. One diamond is hidden on the roundabout; the other two lie far beyond the village. Zebedee puts them on Train, a magical locomotive, to search for the diamonds. Zeebad finds Soldier Sam, an animatronic Foot Guard, and brings him to life to help hunt for the diamonds.

Butch Hartman wrote the U.S. screenplay adaptation, which was heavily revised with pop-culture references; during the 2017 Weinstein scandal he said most of his input had been rewritten and rerecorded and that he "had maybe 3% to do with" the finished film.
Paul Bassett Davies wrote three drafts of the script, removing the narrative structure of the original, and the Sanoussi brothers disliked this because it was not their vision.
Dave Borthwick was hired to oversee the storyboards and scripts but was sidelined after a personal crisis in pre-production; when Pathé UK lost confidence in him, he brought in his student Frank Passingham to take over.
The animators used key-framing rather than motion capture so the characters would not look too close to reality, and switched from 3D Studio MAX to Softimage XSI because MAX's interface was too slow.
