Plot summary
Grace and Edward live in a house in Seaford, Sussex, by the chalk cliffs of Hope Gap, and their marriage has lasted 29 years. Grace is devout and literary, and she voices her unhappiness with Edward's passivity; Edward teaches history at a secondary school and retreats into silence to avoid conflict. Jamie, their grown son, comes from London for a weekend that Edward asked him to make. Once they are alone, Edward tells Jamie that he plans to move out, and that Angela, the mother of a former student of his, is the reason. The two have been involved for a year. Jamie is shaken and agrees to keep the news from his mother.
