Plot summary
On a clear day in the Oxfordshire countryside, Joe and his partner Claire picnic in a field to mark their reunion. A hot air balloon comes down on them, its pilot caught by the leg in the anchor rope and his grandson, the only passenger, too frightened to jump. Joe and three other men run to hold the basket down. A gust lifts them all into the air; most drop back safely, but one man falls to his death. The balloon lands and the boy is unhurt. At dinner with Claire and their friends Robin and Rachel, Joe describes how the incident has shaken him. Jed, who was among the rescuers, later telephones Joe and asks him to come outside and talk about what happened, and Joe finds Jed waiting across the road.
