Plot summary
The title of Santa Claus has passed from father to son for generations. Malcolm, the twentieth Santa, leads his seventieth Christmas Eve mission aboard a high-tech flying vessel, the S-1, while his older son Steve runs the operation from a control center beneath the North Pole and his younger son Arthur answers the letters children send. During the mission a child nearly catches sight of Malcolm, and in the confusion a wrapped bicycle slips away unnoticed. The elf Bryony finds it, and Arthur recognizes the name on the present: Gwen Hines, a girl in Trelew, Cornwall. Steve argues that losing one present among billions falls within an acceptable margin, but Grandsanta, who has kept an old wooden sleigh hidden away, offers to fly Arthur to Cornwall himself.
