Plot summary
For generations the Maynard family has produced professional killers, and Victor Maynard carries on the trade alone, under the eye of his mother, Louisa. Rose, an ingenious con artist, sells Ferguson, a London gangster, a fake Rembrandt for £900,000, and Ferguson responds by hiring Victor to kill her. Victor trails Rose but misses one chance after another to shoot, and after he stops another assassin from reaching her, a homeless young man named Tony is drawn into their company. Tony mistakes Victor for a private detective and stays, and Victor takes him on as an apprentice. Rose stays with the two men, looking to escape the men Ferguson sends after her.
