Plot summary
A pet chameleon loses his home when his vivarium falls from his owners' car and leaves him alone in the Mojave Desert. A hermit armadillo named Roadkill, out looking for a being he calls the Spirit of the West, points him toward Dirt, a frontier town of animals. On the way he meets Beans, a desert iguana rancher, who brings him into town. Asked who he is, he claims to be a tough drifter called Rango, and a duel with the outlaw Bad Bill follows. When a hawk's attack ends with a fallen water tower, the townsfolk credit him and the elderly tortoise mayor swears him in as sheriff. The town is in the grip of a drought, and Beans wants the new sheriff to find out where the water has gone.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Rango (2011)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Industrial Light & Magic turned down Avatar, for which they had already done some effects tests, in order to work on Rango instead. They wanted a less risky project, and were also taking advantage of their past relationship with Verbinski.
- Johnny Depp could schedule only twenty days to film his scenes, so much of the supporting cast had to film with him whenever it happened to be convenient.
- The anti-smoking organization Breathe California counted at least 60 instances of smoking in the film and called it a public health hazard. Anti-smoking groups petitioned for an R rating instead of the PG the Motion Picture Association of America had given it, but no change was made to the smoking scenes and the film kept its PG.
- The filming was described as "emotion capture": the actors shot their scenes in live action for the animators to use as reference. The cast dressed in their characters' costumes and performed on real sets in order to give them the feel of the Wild West.
