Johnny Worricker has spent years as an MI5 officer, and his best friend and superior, Benedict Baron, brings him into a meeting with the MI5 officer Jill Tankard and the Home Secretary, Anthea Catcheside, over a report the three of them have been handed. Johnny draws attention to what page eight says: the Prime Minister, Alec Beasley, is alleged to have known that American authorities tortured terror suspects in secret prisons, and to have kept that knowledge from the security services. Baron declines to reveal where the information came from. Johnny also gets to know the activist who lives next door to him, Nancy Pierpan, whose brother the Israeli military killed.
