Plot summary
A year after helping Jack Sparrow slip away from Port Royal, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann are about to marry when Lord Cutler Beckett arrives with warrants for their arrest. Beckett offers to drop the charges if Will brings him Jack and his compass. Jack has troubles of his own: he once struck a bargain with Davy Jones to raise the Black Pearl from the depths, and the thirteen years are up. His debt is his soul, to be served aboard the Flying Dutchman, or the Kraken will drag him to Davy Jones' Locker. Bootstrap Bill Turner comes aboard to mark Jack with the Black Spot. Jack means to find the Dead Man's Chest, which holds the heart of Davy Jones; whoever holds that heart commands Jones.

- Johnny Depp's stunt double Tony Angelotti was injured filming a "human yo-yo" stunt in July 2005 and rushed to hospital with internal bleeding after nicking a branch off his femoral artery; he lost six units of blood and spent a year in recovery.
- Filming in Dominica ran into real logistical trouble because the island's government was unprepared for a Hollywood-scale shoot: the roughly 500-person crew ended up occupying around 90 percent of the island's roads, on top of alternating torrential rain and heat that made the cast's period costumes miserable to wear.
- Before Bill Nighy was officially cast, producers met Jim Broadbent, Iain Glen and Richard E. Grant for the role; Christopher Walken and Ian McShane were also considered, and McShane was later cast as Blackbeard in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
- For Cutler Beckett's introduction, writers Rossio and Elliott had him arrive on shore in a boat while sitting on a horse standing in the boat; they had originally planned that entrance for Don Rafael Montero in The Mask of Zorro, where it was cut for being too expensive.
- The look of the Flying Dutchman drew partly on 17th-century Dutch fluyts and more specifically on the Vasa, a massive Swedish warship that sank in Stockholm's harbor on its maiden voyage in 1628 and was salvaged in 1961 for a museum.
- When the Kraken spits at Jack Sparrow, the substance splattering Johnny Depp's face is not a computer-generated effect at all but real slime physically thrown at the actor on set.
