Plot summary
James Mortmain leased an English castle years ago to cure his writer's block, and the family still lives there in genteel poverty. Twelve years after his first novel made his name, he has written nothing more. His seventeen-year-old daughter Cassandra, who is teaching herself to write, keeps a journal of the household: her beautiful sister Rose, set on marrying a rich man and escaping poverty; her stepmother Topaz, an ex-model; and Stephen, the family's devoted helper, whose mother was once their maid and who loves Cassandra without return. Then the new landlord, the wealthy American Simon Cotton, heir to an English fortune and title, visits with his brother Neil, and Rose sees her chance.
