Plot summary
Nineteen-year-old Kim was a champion skateboarder until her mother died in a car crash. She gave up the sport and took work in a burger bar so she could help her father, Bill, with the bills. Wanting better pay, she applies to be a chalet girl in the Alps and is accepted at the last minute when the girl already in the job breaks her leg. Georgie, a second chalet girl, arrives to help, and the two do not get along at first because Kim is not posh and cannot ski. Kim is attracted to Jonny, the son of the family she works for, though he has a girlfriend, Chloe. Learning to snowboard is hard until Mikki coaches her and pushes her toward a competition with a cash prize.

- Chalet Girl grew out of one of writer Tom Williams's several pitches to producer Harriet Rees at the 2007 International Screenwriters' Festival; the first draft arrived on Christmas Eve 2007 and a further 123 versions were written before shooting ended.
- Budget restraints on Chalet Girl meant costume designers flew to meet the actors where they were, including New York City for Ed Westwick, and both Bill Nighy and Brooke Shields wore some of their own items on screen to save money, including Shields's engagement ring.
- Felicity Jones had only been on dry ski slopes as a child and had never snowboarded before Chalet Girl, so she trained six hours a day for four weeks and also lived as a real chalet girl with Flexiski staff.
- Insurance rules kept director Phil Traill, Ed Westwick and first assistant director Joe Geary off the slopes during the early stages of production; Traill joked he was allowed to ski only on research trips, so he made as many as possible.
- The village scenes were filmed in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in southern Germany, where the interior of a German log cabin was used to double for a house in west London.
